This is the Beringer Estate in St. Helena. For years I photographed the alley of trees that envelope Highway 29 in front of this winery, but I was not satisfied with the results. I also photographed the paths on the side of the road to no great effect, until I made this photograph.

It was very difficult to print since I wanted the pillar to be a "silhouette" and have detail in the shadows, two contradictory goals. This is one of my personal favorites.
