This photograph was taken in 2004 from the summit of Mt. Vision in Point Reyes—an area scarred by the infamous Vision Fire of 1995, which burned a large portion of the park. In the foreground, you see the stark silhouettes of the fire-killed trees, still standing like sentinels, while below them, new growth begins to rise—a quiet, steady return of life.

The sunset that night was intense, almost symbolic—fiery reds and golds streaking through the sky, casting the landscape in dramatic contrast. It felt like the land itself was remembering, and healing.

More than 20 years later, the forest has reemerged, but this image captures that in-between moment—when the memory of destruction was still raw, and the first signs of renewal were just beginning to take hold.
